History of the Breed: This breed originated in Poltalloch, Scotland, where they were a working Terrier used to eliminate vermin such as
fox and otter where rocks and crags and generally rough terrain made speed and cunning mixed with intelligence a requirement. These small white
terriers were preferred by the Malcolm family. The Malcom family developed the Westie over at least three generations and quite possibly as far
back as King James the 1st who asked for some "earth-dogges" out of Argyleshire. Westies were developed by selective breeding of the white or
sandy colored Cairn types and the Scottish Terrier.
General Appearance: A compact white Terrier, strongly built with a deep chest and powerful hindquarters on muscular legs. The coat is
about two inches long, white in color, hard, with plenty of soft undercoat.
