History of the Breed: The Swedish Vallhund is indigenous to Sweden and dates back at least 1000 years to the days of the Vikings.
The breed is also known as the Vikingarnas Hund, and the Viking Dog. It is thought that the Swedish Vallhund
is older than the Welsh Corgi.
The breed was almost extinct by 1942, thankfully, Mr. Bjorn von Rosen and Mr. K.G. Zettersten begain a breeding program and are
credited with restoring the breed we know today as the Swedish Vallhund. In 1948, the Swedish Kennel Club recognized the breed.
General Appearance: Somewhat resembling a leaner version of a Pembrook Welsh Corgi, the Swedish Vallhund is a sturdily built Spitz herding dog.
The body is 1/3 longer than it is tall. The head is wedge-shaped with a broad and flat skull, the muzzle is square and slightly shorter than the skull.
The nose and lips are black. The oval eyes are medium sized and dark brown with black eye rims. The pointed medium sized ears are prick and set at the
outer edge of the skull. The neck is long and strongly muscled. The chest has a long oval well sprung ribcage with its depth reaching down two-fifths
of the length of the forelegs. The tail can be natural (long, stub, or bob) or docked. The coat is medium in length and sable in coloring.
