History of the Breed: The Sussex Spaniel originated and takes its name from Sussex, England. The breed was developed from crosses between a number of Spaniels including the English Springer and the Clumber Spaniel in order to produce an ideally suited hunting on foot dog. Mr. Fuller of Rosehill Sussex, England, is credited with being the founder of the breed were he kept them as working dogs for 50 years on his large estate. The Sussex almost became extinct as a result of World War II. Thanks to dedicated breeders the breed has survived however, it is considered a rare breed both in England as well as America.

General Appearance: A medium sized long, low-set, heavy boned Spaniel. The skull is long and wide with a broad and square muzzle that is three inches long and with a pronounced stop. The skull is longer than the muzzle. The liver colored nose has well developed nostrils. The large eyes are hazel in color and framed by heavy eye brows that provide a frowning expression. The large lobe shaped ears are set low and are Spaniel like. The body is long and low-set with a deep and wide chest. The tail is set low and docked. The dog is covered in a flat or slightly wavy soft rich golden liver colored coat with the ears, legs, undersides, chest, and tail having a longer length and more feathering.
