History of the Breed: The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier originated in Ireland and is at least a 200 year old breed.
These Terriers were bred as general purpose farm dogs and were used to eliminate vermin, guard the family larder, for herding
sheep and cattle, as a hunting dog for tracking otter and badgers, and used to warn off trespassers.
Some people used them for poaching game on estates.
The AKC admitted the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier to the Terrier Group in 1973
General Appearance: A medium-sized athletic terrier. The head appears rectangular and moderately long with a defined stop.
The skull is flat and clean between the ears. The skull and foreface is of equal length. The dark eyes are almond shaped and set fairly
wide apart. The ears drop slightly forward, with the inside edge of the ear lying next to the cheek and pointing to the ground. The muzzle
is powerful and well filled below the eyes. The large nose is black. The body is compact and short coupled with a deep chest with well
sprung ribs. The tail is docked. The wheaten colored coat is soft and wavy.
