History of the Breed: Skye is the oldest Terrier from Scotland dating back to the 16th century and named after the Isle of Skye in northwestern Scotland. This Terrier was bred by farmers to hunt and eliminate small animals such as foxes, polecats, martens, otters, and badgers. Their excellent scenting abilities and athletic well muscled bodies enabled them to locate these vermin underground and remove them from their burrows.
Queen Victoria owned and had a fondness for the Skye Terrier.

The Skye Terrier was first registered with the AKC in 1887

General Appearance: A small low-set powerful Terrier that is longer than tall. The head is long and tapers to a strong and powerful muzzle ending with a black nose. The medium sized brown eyes are close set. The well feathered ears are carried prick or drop. If prick, they are medium in size, placed high on the skull. If drop, they are larger in size and set lower on the head hanging flat against the skull. The body is long and low with a deep chest and oval-shaped ribs. The body is covered in a profuse long and straight coat with the ears and tail being well feathered and the muzzle bearded.

Coat: A double coat with the under-coat being short and woolly and the outer-coat being long, hard and straight. The hair is parted from the head to the tail and hangs straight down on each side. The ears and tail are well feathered and the muzzle is bearded.

Color: Black, grey, cream, and fawn all with black points

Grooming needs: Medium - requires regular grooming

Friendly with other dogs: Yes, if properly socialized starting at an early age
