History of the Breed: The foundation stock for the Shih Tsu is believed to come from an ancient small Tibetan dog. These dogs
were introduced to the Chinese court and bred in the Forbidden City of Peking with other dogs including the Pekinese. The word "Shih Tzu"
means "lion" These dogs were favored by the royal family. The Dowager Empress, Tzu Hsi, (1861-1908) is credited with the refinement
of the breed.
The Shih Tzu was registered by the AKC in 1969
General Appearance: A compact, noble, and luxuriously coated toy breed. The head is round and broad between the eyes. The
large round eyes are dark and placed well apart. The ears are large and heavily coated. The muzzle is very short, almost flat and it
is square. The nose is black with broad open nostrils. The body is slightly longer than tall. The chest is broad and deep extending to
the elbow. The tail is carried in a curve well over the back. The body is covered in a long, dense and flowing coat of hair.
