History of the Breed: The breed originated on the Shetland Islands, off the northeast coast of Scotland. The Sheltie was not bred down from the full-size Collie but rather from crossing the Scottish Rough Collies with the Icelandic Yakkin, a small island dog. The breed was initially used as a herding dog but over time developed into an all-purpose farm dog and companion.

The Shetland Sheepdog was registered by the AKC in 1911.

General Appearance: A small herding dog that looks like a small Rough Collie. The head is long and wedge shaped tapering slightly from the ears to the nose. The skull is flat and the muzzle is well-rounded. The almond shaped eyes are dark. The small ears are placed high on the head and carried three-fourths erect. The chest is deep with the brisket reaching to the elbow. The back is level and strongly muscled. The tail reaches to the hock joint and at rest is carried straight down. The dog is covered in a coat of long and straight harsh hair that is longer on the mane, forelegs, hind legs, and tail.

Height 13 - 16 inches
Weight 14 - 20 pounds

Coat: A double coat, the undercoat is dense and short and the outer coat is long and straight with harsh hair. The hair is longer on the mane, forelegs, hind legs, and tail.

Color: Black, blue merle, and sable all marked with varying amounts of white and/or tan.

Grooming needs: Low, brushing once a week

Temperament of Breed: Very intelligent, and gentle. They enjoy exercise and tend to bark a lot.

Friendly with other dogs: Yes, if properly socialized starting at an early age

Suitability as a watchdog: Excellent
