History of the Breed: The Scottish Deerhound can be traced back to the middle ages. This breed was used by the Scottish nobility as a deer hunting dog. No one ranking below the position of Earl was permitted to own one. These dogs were so well liked they became known as the royal dog of Scotland. The breed almost became extinct as a result of gun hunting, exclusive ownership, development of fenced agriculture, and the popularity of the smooth Greyhound. In the early 19th century Archibald and Duncan Mc Neill are credited with restoring the breed.

The AKC registered the Scottish Deerhound in 1886

The eyes are dark brown or hazel. The dark colored small ears are set high and folded back. The body has a deep chest producing great lung capacity. The loin is well arched and drooping to the tail. The body is greyhound like except larger in size and in bone. Broad legs, forearms, and hindquarters, with long straight forelegs. The tail is long tapered and is carried low and curves slightly.
