History of the Breed: The Schipperke is the smallest of the Belgian shepherd dogs. This general purpose breed was used as a
companion dog, watch dog, a ratter, a hunting dog, and as a herding dog. They were used extensively as guarddogs on canalboats in
Flandres. They became fashionable once Queen Marie Henriette chose one as a pet in 1885.
General Appearance: A small solid black dog with prick ears a foxy face and no tail. The head is of medium width, narrowing
toward the muzzle. The skull is slightly rounded. The upper jaw is moderately filled in under the eyes, so that, the head forms a
wedge tapering smoothly from the back of the skull to the tip of the small black nose. The small oval eyes are dark brown, and placed forward
on the head. The small triangular ears are placed high on the head. The chest is broad and deep, and reaches to the elbows. The loin is
short and muscular. The solid black coat is short on the face and ears and longer on the body and even longer on the ruff, cape, jabot and
culottes.
