History of the Breed: The Saluki is considered the oldest known breed of domesticated dog. This breed dates back to Alexander the Great and ancient Egypt. The breed was used by Arabs for hunting and it was quick enough to take down gazelles. Salukis were brought to England in the mid 19th century and were known as Persian Greyhounds. The breed became recognized when the Hon. Florence Amherst imported the first Arabian Saluki in 1895 from the kennels of Prince Abdulla in Transjordania. The English found these dogs to excel at coursing hares.

The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1927

General Appearance: Resembles a Greyhound but with feathering on the ears, legs, and tail. The head is long and narrow and moderately wide between the ears. The nose is black or liver. The long ears are covered with long silky hair hanging close to the skull. The eyes are large dark and oval. The chest is deep and moderately narrow. The back is broad with the muscles slightly arched over the loin. The tail is long, set low and carried in a curve and is well feathered on the underside. The coat is smooth and of a soft silky texture.

Coat: Smooth and of a soft silky texture, slight feathering on the legs, feathering at the back of the thighs and sometimes with slight woolly feathering on the thigh and shoulder.

Color: White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle and tan, tricolor, and black and tan.

Friendly with other dogs: Yes, caution should be taken around small pets as these dogs are sighthounds.
