History of the Breed: This breed can trace its foundation stock back to the introduction of the Roman armies into Europe. The Romans
required massive supply lines to provision the traveling army. Drover dogs were used to keep the cattle herds that were part of the supply
line intact. These Mastiff type dogs were also used to guard the provisions at night. The Roman army eventually worked its way over the Alps into
what is now Württemberg, Germany and eventually into the small town of Rottweil. This area became known for its cattle and its cattle dogs. Bred
from the Roman cattle dogs, they excelled at droving and guarding the cattle from robbers and wild animals. This breed came to be known as the
Rottweiler Metzgershund "the Butcher's Dog of Rottweil". By the late 19th century, the breed almost became extinct. The driving of cattle
was outlawed and these dogs had little use. The need for Police dogs during World War I led to a great need for the Rottweiler and the population
was restored.
In 1935 the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club.
