History of the Breed: The breed originated in Georgia in the 19th century from the crossing of Red Foxhounds with Bloodhounds.
The breed was developed to hunt and tree raccoons and for trailing and treeing bears, cougars and bobcats. George F.L. Birdsong is credited
with the foundation stock of the modern day Redbone. The first of the Redbone Coonhounds were commonly called Saddle Backs
because they were red in color but many had black saddle markings. Using selective breeding the saddle like markings were bred out of the breed
to produce today's Redbone Coonhound.
General Appearance: A large hound breed with a broad head and square muzzle. The black nose has large open nostrils. The round dark
eyes are set well apart. The long hound ears are set low on the head. The body has a deep broad well sprung chest and long straight powerful
legs. The saber like tail is strong at the root and reaches to the hock. The solid red coat is short and smooth.
