History of the Breed: The English Pointers likely evolved from the crossing of several breeds including the Foxhound, Setting Spaniel,
Greyhound, Bloodhound, and the Spanish Pointer. The first Pointers appeared in England around 1650. This breed was originally used to aid Greyhounds
in coursing. In the 18th century gun hunting for birds required a dog with unique skills and the Pointer was considered the best in class.
The American Kennel Club first registered the Pointer in 1878.
General Appearance: The head is about as wide as the length of the muzzle with a pronounced stop. The nostrils are well developed
and open wide. The ears are set at eye level close to the head and reach just below the lower jaw. The rounded eyes are dark. The body has a
deep chest reaching to the elbow with well sprung ribs. The back is strong and the loin is powerful and slightly arched. The tail reaches
to the hock and tapers to a fine point and is carried level with the back or slightly higher.
The coat is short, dense and smooth.
