History of the Breed: The Pharaoh Hound is an ancient breed with lineage dating back 3000 years. The ancient Egyptian civilization produced art and hieroglyphics supporting the existence of these dogs. The Egyptians praised the dog for its hunting skills and its ability to form loyal relationships. It is likely the Phoenician traders brought this dog to the island of Malta at least 2000 years ago. The Pharaoh Hound of today closely resembles the ancient Egyptian dog. The Maltese breeders are credited in maintaining the breed purity. The American Kennel Club registered the Pharaoh Hound on August 1, 1983.

General Appearance: A medium sized, lean and athletic sighthound. The wedge shaped head is long and lean and carried high. The amber eyes are oval. The ears are set high and carried erect. The nose is flesh colored and blends with the coat. The lean body has a deep brisket that reaches almost to the elbow with well sprung ribs. The tapering tail reaches below the point of the hock. The red coat is short and glossy.

Color: Red ranging from mahogany to copper, with white markings. These white markings can be; A white tip on the tail, white on the chest, White on the toes, or a slim white center line on the muzzle.
