History of the Breed: Descended from the larger Griffon Vendeen, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is a French scent hound. Bred to hunt rabbit and other small game by scent. These hardy dogs were developed to work over the rough terrain found on the western coast of France. Translated, the name Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen means "small, low to the ground, rough or wire coated, Vendéen (area of France)"

The breed was admitted to the AKC December 1, 1990. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Club of America was founded in 1984.

General Appearance: A small low slung dog with a head that is longer than wide. The eyes are large and have long eyebrows. The low set narrow ears are covered with long hair and are oval in shape and reach almost to the end of the nose. The black nose is large with wide nostrils and the beard and moustache provide a unique appearance. The compact body is muscular and longer than tall. The chest is deep, with rounded ribs. The well furnished tail tapers and reaches to the hock and is carried at about two o'clock. The outercoat is rough and long.

Coat: A double coat, the undercoat is thick and short. The outercoat is rough and long with longer hair on the eyebrows ears, beard, and moustache. The tail is well furnished with hair.

Color: White with any combination of lemon, orange, black, sable, tricolor or grizzle markings.

Grooming needs: Low, a weekly brushing is recommended.

Temperament of Breed: Energetic and always wanting to please.

Friendly with other dogs: Yes, like most hound pack dogs they get along well with other dogs

Exercise Level: Medium, should have daily exercise

Major: Hypothyroidism, persistent pupillary membranes, epilepsy, hip dysplasia
Minor: Yeast infections in the ears
