History of the Breed: An old breed that likely originated in the 9th or 10th century in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The Swedish Vallhund was believed to have been crossed with other native Welsh dogs to produce the Corgi. Some believe the Flemish weavers, who settled in Pembrokeshire bred their native dogs with local cattle dogs to produce the Corgi. The Corgi has been used for many centuries as a herding dog.

In 1934 the Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis were recognized by both the English Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club as two distinct breeds.

General Appearance: A small sturdy dog longer than tall and low setting with a fox shaped head that is wide and flat between the ears with a somewhat tapered muzzle and a black nose. The brown oval eyes are medium sized. The erect ears are of medium size and taper slightly to a rounded point. The body has a well sprung rib cage and is moderately long with a deep chest. The tail is docked. The coat lies flat on the body it is thicker and longer around the neck, chest and on the shoulders. Hair is longer on the back of the forelegs and on the rear of the hindquarters.

Coat: A double coat, the undercoat is short, thick and weather resistant. The longer outercoat lies flat on the body. The length of hair varies and is thicker and longer around the neck, chest and on the shoulders. Hair is longer on the back of the forelegs and on the rear of the hindquarters.

Color: Red, sable, fawn, black and tan with or without white markings. White is acceptable on legs, chest, neck, and muzzle.
