History of the Breed: These dogs were used to lure or draw waterfowl to within gunshot range of hunters, the dogs would then be sent out to retrieve these dead or wounded birds. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is believed to have originated in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada. The development of the breed likely came from the red decoy dog that was brought to Nova Scotia by early settlers from Europe. Crosses with other breeds, including spaniels, setters, retrievers, and collies were likely used to produced the modern Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.

Official breed status was granted by the Canadian Kennel Club in 1945. American Kennel Club granted full recognition into the Sporting Group on July 1, 2003.

General Appearance: A medium size dog, and the smallest breed in the retriever family. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever has a slightly wedge shaped broad head with almond shaped eyes that are set well apart. Eye color blends with the coat. The triangle shaped feathered drop ears are set high and well back on the head. The jaws are strong enough to carry a sizeable bird. The nose is broad with the nostrils well open, tapering at the tip. The nose color is black or blends with the coat color. The body has a deep chest with the brisket reaching to the elbow. The back is strong, short and straight. The loins are strong and muscular. The tail is broad at the base well feathered, and reaches to the hock and is carried below the back except when alert, then it is held high in a curve above the back. The medium sized feet are webbed. The red or orange colored coat is of moderate length with the ears and the tail being heavily feathered and the legs somewhat feathered.

Coat: A double coat, with the outer coat being of moderate length and waterproof and the undercoat being dense. The tail is heavily feathered and the legs are moderately feathered.

Color: The coat color may be any shade of red or orange with some white on the chest, feet, nose, head, and tip of the tail.

Grooming needs: Medium, the coat should be brushed weekly based on activity level.
