History of the Breed: The Schnauzer is a German breed and can be traced to the 15th century. The Miniature Schnauzer is derived from the Standard Schnauzer and is said to have been bred smaller by crossing of Affenpinschers, Poodles, Miniature Pinschers, with small Standards. The Miniature Schnauzer was first exhibited as a distinct breed in the late 19th century.

Miniature Schnauzers have been bred in the United States since 1925.

General Appearance: A Miniature version of the Standard Schnauzer, sturdily built, nearly square in proportion. The head is strong and rectangular. The topskull is flat and fairly long. The foreface is parallel to the topskull, with a slight stop. The muzzle is strong and ends in a moderately blunt manner, with thick whiskers which accentuate the rectangular shape of the head. The oval eyes are dark brown, small and deep-set. The ears when uncropped are small and V-shaped and fold close to the skull. The body is short and deep, with the brisket extending at least to the elbows. Ribs are well sprung and deep, extending well back to a short loin. The tail is docked and set high and carried erect.

Coat: Double, with hard, wiry, outer coat and close undercoat. The head, neck, ears, chest, tail, and body coat must be plucked. Close covering on neck, ears and skull.

Color: Salt and pepper, black and silver and solid black.
