There are several theories associated with the Poodle's origins, although it is the National dog of France, the breed's actual roots may have come from Germany where it is known as the pudel or water dog. The Standard Poodle's original popularity was largely due to its ability as a water dog, in fact the Standard can be traced back to Egypt and Rome were it was used in this capacity. Poodles were first brought to North America at the end of the 19th century but the breed did not become popular until after the Second World War. By the mid 20th century the Poodle was one of the most popular breeds in the United States.
