History of the Breed: The Old English Mastiff is a giant shorthaired dog. The Mastiff has been bred in England for two thousand years. The breed was used by the Romans to fight on the battle field. It has been used in bear-baiting, bull-baiting, dog fighting, lion-baiting and guarding. In 1920, the first Mastiff Club of America was founded.

General Appearance: A massive and powerful ancient dog. The large square muscular head has a broad skull with a slightly curved wrinkled forehead and a moderate stop. The square cut off muzzle is short. The broad dark nose has large flat nostrils. The brown eyes are medium sized and set wide apart. The small dark thin ears are V-shaped, rounded at the tips and set widely apart at the highest points on the sides of the skull. The neck is powerful and very muscular. The body has a wide and deep chest that reaches down to at least the elbow. The back is muscular and straight. The loins are wide and muscular. The tail tapers and reaches to the hocks and is carried straight. The coat is straight coarse and short.

Coat: A double coat with an outercoat that is straight, coarse, and moderately short. The undercoat is dense, short, and close lying.

Color: Fawn, apricot, or brindle with the muzzle, ears, and nose preferably black.

Grooming needs: Low

Temperament of Breed: Very possessive of the home and family. It may be combative with other dogs if not well socialized as a puppy.
Friendly with children: Yes, if properly socialized at an early age
Friendly with other dogs: Yes, if properly socialized at an early age. Should always be on a leash in public places.

Suitability as a watchdog: Excellent

Major: Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), gastric dilation, torsion, bloat, von Willebrand's disease.
