History of the Breed: This breed named after the city of Manchester in England originated from the work of John Hulme. Mr. Hulme wanted to breed a small quick working dog. He mated a Whippet bitch with a rough Black and Tan terrier that was an excellent ratter. A rat killing sport developed in England in the 19th century where dogs were put into pits with rats and bets were placed on dogs that could kill the greatest number of rats. The Manchester terrier excelled in this sport.

General Appearance: A small, black, short-coated dog with distinctive rich mahogany markings. The head is long, narrow and almost flat and resembles a blunted wedge. The muzzle and skull are equal in length. The muzzle is well filled under the eyes with no visible cheek muscles. The underjaw is full and well defined and the nose is black. The ears are erect, they should be wider at the base and taper to pointed tips, and carried well up on the skull. The compact, muscular body is slightly longer than tall with a deep chest. The tail is moderately short reaching to the hock joint and tapers to a point. The tail is carried in a slight upward curve. The black and tan coat is smooth, short and dense.

Coat: The coat is smooth, short, dense and glossy.

Color: The coat color is jet black and rich mahogany tan. A very small tan spot is present over each eye, and on each cheek.

Temperament of Breed: Full of energy, intelligent, alert, and very much a terrier.
Friendly with children: Yes, with proper socialization starting at an early age.
Friendly with other dogs: Yes, with proper socialization starting at an early age. They can be aggressive with other animals.
