History of the Breed: This breed at one time was called the Patterdale Terrier it originated in Cumberland County in England in the early 19th century and is a descendant of the old English Black and Tan, Wire Fox Terrier, the Boarder Terrier, and the Bedlington Terrier. It was bred to hunt vermin in the rugged shale mountains of the northern England Lake District. Farmers who kept these dogs used them to destroy the foxes found raiding the sheepfolds. These Terriers were also used extensively to hunt Otter.

The Lakeland Terrier was accepted for registration in the AKC Stud Book in 1934.

General Appearance: The rectangular head is well balanced with a strong muzzle and black nose. The eyes are small and oval in shape and set wide apart. The eye color can be hazel, brown or black. The V-shaped ears are small and fold just above the top of the skull. The body is strong with an oval shaped deep chest that extends to the elbows. The ribs are well sprung and the loins are taut and short. The docked tail is set high on the back and carried upright. The coat is wiry and hard with the coat on the skull, ears, forechest, shoulders and behind the tail trimmed short and smooth. The coat on the body is longer. The coat on the legs and foreface are kept long. The legs should appear cylindrical. The face is trimmed to provide a rectangular appearance.

Coat: A double coat, the outer coat is hard and wiry and the undercoat is short and soft. The coat on the skull, ears, forechest, shoulders and behind the tail is trimmed short and smooth. The coat on the body is longer. The coat on the legs should be groomed to appear cylindrical and the foreface should be groomed to look rectangular.

Color: Black and tan, blue and tan, red, grizzle and tan, liver and tan, wheaten, blue, black or red grizzle

Grooming needs: High, regular brushing, and the coat requires hand plucking or striping to maintain strong color and proper texture.
