History of the Breed: The Kerry Blue Terrier originated in County Kerry, Ireland and it was bred as a general working and utility terrier. These intelligent terriers were used for hunting small game, retrieving game from land and water, and for herding sheep and cattle. After the formation of the Irish Republic the Kerry Blue started to appear in shows and met with quick favor.

The Kerry in Ireland is fostered by the Irish Blue Terrier Club of Dublin, organized by H. G. Fotterell.

General Appearance: The head appears long with a flat skull and slight stop, the eyes are dark and small. The small ears are V-shaped and carried forward close to the cheeks with the top of the folded ear slightly above the level of the skull. The foreface full and well made up. Jaws deep, strong and muscular. The nose is black with large wide nostrils. The body has a short back that is strong and straight, a deep chest with well sprung ribs and a short and powerful loin. The tail is set high, of moderate length and carried erect. The body is covered in a blue soft, dense and wavy coat.

Coat: Soft, dense and wavy.

Color: Any shade of blue gray, gray blue, or deep slate to light blue gray.

Grooming needs: High, the Kerry requires weekly brushing to prevent matting. They also require trimming every six to eight weeks.

Temperament of Breed: Like most Terriers the Kerry is energetic, fun, playful and can be stubborn.

Friendly with other dogs: Yes, with proper socialization at an early age

Suitability as a watchdog: Excellent
