History of the Breed: The Italian Greyhound is the smallest of the sighthounds. These small greyhound dogs appear in ancient decorative
arts of the Mediterranean countries dating back 2000 years. During the sixteenth century this breed was highly sought after by the Italians
during the renaissance. It is believed that the name Italian Greyhound originated then. The breed made their way to England in the seventeenth
century and continued to gain in popularity. An Italian Greyhound was registered for the first time with the American Kennel Club in 1886.
Following World War I when the breed was in danger of extinction in Great Britain, fresh stock was imported from the United States to restore
the breed. The Italian Greyhound Club of America was founded in 1954. The Italian Greyhound is the result of selective breeding, although
these small dogs are mainly used for companionship they have been used for hunting purposes, often in combination with hunting falcons.
General Appearance: The Italian Greyhound is very similar to the Greyhound, but much smaller and more slender in all proportions.
The head is narrow and long, tapering to a black or brown nose. The skull is almost flat with a long and fine muzzle.
The eyes are dark and medium in size. The fine ears are small and thrown back except when alerted. The body is short coupled and high at the withers
with a curved back and very apparent tuck-up at the flanks. The chest is deep and narrow. The tail reaches the hock and is slender and tapering.
The coat is short, glossy and soft to the touch.

Color: Any color and markings are acceptable except that a dog with brindle markings and a dog with the tan markings
normally found on black-and-tan dogs of other breeds must be disqualified

Temperament of Breed: The Italian Greyhound is hardy, very affectionate, intelligent and makes a good family pet.
Friendly with children: Yes, however, the Italian Greyhound has thin bones that are fragile and they can be hurt by rough play from young children.
