History of the Breed: The tallest dog breed in the world it was originally used to hunt wolf, boar, and the gigantic Irish elk, which stood six feet at the shoulders. With the disappearance of these animals from Ireland primarily caused from the popularity of gun dogs, and excessive exportation from Ireland, the breed almost became extinct. Captain George A. Graham is credited with saving the Irish Wolfhound by gathered the remaining specimens and carefully restoring the population. His work began in 1862 and took almost 25 years. He was a major contributor to the first breed standard. Because of the breed's great size and the amount of exercise essential to the dog's well being, the Irish Wolfhound is not a dog to be acquired without serious thought.

General Appearance: The largest and tallest of the galloping hounds the Irish Wolfhound is a rough-coated Greyhound-like breed that is very muscular and graceful. The head is long with a long and somewhat pointed muzzle. The small ears are carried like a Greyhound. The eyes are dark. The chest is very deep with a wide breast and shoulders that are quite strong and muscular. The long powerful legs have large round feet. The tail is long and slightly curved. The body including the tail is covered with rough wiry hard hair.

Coat: The body coat is rough and hard. The head has longer wiry hair over the eyes and underjaw.

Color: The colors are gray, brindle, red, black, pure white, and fawn.
