History of the Breed: This is an older breed that is considered to be the founding ancestor of modern Spaniels.
The English Springer Spaniel is the largest of the Spaniel breeds. They were quite popular during the Renaissance
period for their working ability. This breed became popular in America in the 18th century.
Currently, the English Springer Spaniel falls into two categories, those bred for show
dogs referred to as "bench bred" and dogs bred for hunting and/or field trials are referred to as "field
bred". The Spaniel is depicted in paintings as early as the 17th century however, Spaniels were not categorized by breed until the
19th century.
General Appearance: A medium-sized very attractive and athletic dog with a double coat of medium length hair sporting
plenty of long fringe on the chest, legs and belly. The head is of medium length, fairly broad and slightly rounded with a broad and
deep muzzle well chiseled below the eyes, a dark nose with well developed nostrils, eyes are medium sized, almond shaped, expressive,
and hazel, the ears are long, silky, rounded, and Spaniel like. The tail is docked and always moving with excitement.

Coat: A double coat, an outer coat and an undercoat. On the body, the outer coat is of
medium length, flat or wavy, and is easily distinguishable from the undercoat, which is short, soft and dense.
The ears, chest, legs and belly of the Springer are nicely furnished with a fringe of feathering of moderate length
and heaviness. On the head, front of the forelegs, and below the hock joints on the front of the hind legs, the hair is short and fine.
Color: Black or liver with white markings, white with black or liver markings, blue or liver roan, and tricolor.
Grooming needs: Medium, combing or brushing weekly based on activity
Temperament of Breed: This breed is gentle and very sociable and requires activity and a sense of purpose. If left alone for
extended periods of time they will become destructive and are prone to excessive barking.

Friendly with other dogs: Yes, with proper socialization at an early age. Can be aggressive with same sex dogs.

The English Springer Spaniel Club
