History of the Breed: The Doberman Pinscher derived its name from Louis Dobermann of Apolda, Germany who was a Policeman and wanted a
fiercely protective dog to accompany him on his rounds. It is thought that Herr Dobermann and his breeding experiments were likely involved
in the breed's early development. There is no definitive information on the complete list of dog breeds used to develop the Doberman however,
the information that is available suggests the Black and Tan Manchester Terrier and the Black English Greyhound were used to improve the Doberman's
appearance. The Old German Shepherd, German Pinscher, Rottweiler, German Shorthaired Pointer, and the Weimaraner were also likely crossed to
create the breed.
General Appearance: A medium sized dog with a body that is deep chested, muscular, powerful and square and very refined. The head is
shaped like a wedge with eyes that are dark and almond shaped, ears are normally cropped in the (U.S.) and carried erect.
The cheeks are flat and muscular and the nose is either solid black, (black dogs) or dark brown, (red dogs) or dark gray, (blue dogs), dark tan,
(fawn dogs).
The chest is broad with a well defined forechest, the ribs are well sprung with the brisket reaching deep to the elbow. The belly is well tucked up
and the loins are wide and muscled. The tail is docked and carried horizontal. The coat is short, smooth and glossy.
