History of the Breed: A short legged terrier that was developed in the 17th century as an otter and badger hunter in the border counties of Scotland and England. Bred from selected dogs of the border hunters between England and Scotland, this dog is likely one of the oldest breeds of terrier. Sir Walter Scott made these dogs famous in his popular novel, Guy Mannering, published in 1814. After Guy Mannering achieved popularity, these little terriers were in great demand.

General Appearance: Low to ground, short-legged, long-bodied breed that was bred to follow game into burrows. The dog has a large rounded head, strong forehead with black nose. The large round hazel eyes set wide and low. The dog stands just 11 inches at the shoulder and has a soft, crisp, non-shedding, double coat that is either bluish black, gray, or mustard in color. The dog is finished with a long tail that is carried with an upward curve.

Coat: Double coated with a 2 inches long top coat that covers the body from skull to tail made of a mixture of hardish and soft hair. The hair on the underpart of the body is lighter in color and softer than on the top.

Color: Pepper or mustard, pepper ranges from a dark blue-black to a light grey (silver). The mustard color can be a reddish brown to a pale fawn, the head is creamy white, legs and feet are slightly darker than the head.

Temperament of Breed: Like all terriers this breed is fearless when aroused. The Dandie has a stubborn streak and will benefit from obedience training

Friendly with other dogs: This breed can be dog aggressive. Socialization is recommended as a puppy to mitigate this problem.
