History of the Breed: Thought to be one of the oldest Retriever breeds. It was developed in England likely from crosses with the
Close-Curled English Water Dog, the Old Water Spaniel and the St. John's Newfoundland and likely the Poodle in the late 19th century.
The Curly was bred for hunting and retrieving and works to an exceptional degree in the water. This breed is an ideal dog for retrieving duck
and other birds. He has a gentle temperament making him an outstanding family companion.
General Appearance: A large retriever with a coat that is either solid black or solid liver in color and has tight curls that insulate
from cold water and protect the dog from brambles. The entire body including the ears, back of the head, the neck and tail are covered with these
tight curls. Only the face, hocks and front of the legs are smooth. The head is wedge-shaped, longer than it is wide. The muzzle tapers to a
well-developed dark nose, the ears are small. The eyes are either black or brown. The chest is deep and oval in shape
with the brisket reaching to the elbow. The ribs are well-sprung and extend well back into a deep powerful loin. The tail reaches approximately
to the hock and is carried straight. The coat is a thick mass of small tight curls that lie close to the skin with the coat color being solid
black or solid liver.
