History of the Breed: The Coton de Tulear is a member of the Bichon family of dogs. The Bichon are descendents of an ancient European breed called the Barbet. From the Barbet a small dog called the Bichon Tenerife was a developed. The descendent of this breed were used to develop several breeds including the Coton de Reunion. This breed developed in the 16th and 17th century acquired a long cotton-like coat and was prized by sailors and merchants. It is from this now extinct dog that Coton de Tulear descended. The breed was discovered in Tulear, Madagascar, during the 17th Century. Adopted by the ruling tribal monarchy, it became known as "The Royal Dog of Madagascar." During its long development on Madagascar it was crossed with the Moronbdava hunting dog.

General Appearance: A small long haired dog with a somewhat elongated flat head, large dark brown eyes, black lips, and a medium-length muzzle tipped with a black nose. The ears are dropped and covered with long hair. The body coat resembles cotton and is about four-to-six inches long including well-haired limbs. Facial hair creates a prominent beard and moustache look. The look is completed by a tail covered in hair that is carried straight or curled over the dorsum.

Coat: The cotton like coat is about four-to-six inches long and dries quickly when wet.

Color: Three colors - white, (often with champagne or cream highlights), black-and-white, and tri-color. White is the most common color.
