History of the Breed: An ancient northern Chinese breed developed during the Han Dynasty (150 BC). This working dog was used for hunting, herding, pulling, and protection of the home.

General Appearance: A powerful, study, squarely built, upstanding dog of Arctic type, medium in size with strong muscular development and heavy bone. The head is large and broad with a flat skull. The muzzle is short, broad near the eyes and deep. The ears are small and round. The coat can be rough or smooth and in each case the fur is thick around the neck, giving the distinctive ruff that resembles a male Lion. The tail is set high and carried close to the back. Like the Shar-Pei, the Chow Chow has the unusual blue-black tongue the breed also has unusual straight hind legs creating a rather stilted gait.

Coat: There are two types of coats rough and smooth, both are double coated

Rough coat - The outer coat is abundant, dense, straight and off standing, rather coarse in texture with an undercoat that is soft, thick and woolly.

Smooth coat - The outer coat is smooth, hard, and dense with a definite undercoat.

Color: Red (light golden to deep mahogany), black, blue, cinnamon (light fawn to deep cinnamon) and cream.

Grooming needs: Medium

Temperament of Breed: The Chow Chow is a willful and independent breed. They tend to be dominant and they can require a dominant owner to keep them in line.
Friendly with children: Yes
Friendly with other dogs: Yes, but only with proper socialization starting early in life. Keep the Chow Chow on a leash around other dogs.

Suitability as a watchdog: Excellent, they also make good guard dogs as well.
