History of the Breed: The Chinese Shar-Pei, is an ancient and unique breed that originated in the village of Dah-Let near the South China
Sea. These dogs were all purpose working dogs used to guard the family, farms and temples and as a fighting dog. This breed dates to the Han
Dynasty (c. 200 BC).
The name "Shar-Pei" literally means "sand-skin" and refers to the two attributes of the coat a roughness and a shortness. Like the Chow-Chow the
Shar-Pei also has a blue-black tongue.
General Appearance: A compact, medium sized breed covered in a short and harsh coat standing square and is of strong proportion. The
head slightly large for the body and is covered with loose skin with a muzzle that makes the dogs head resemble a hippopotamus. Very small high
set ears complete the hippo look. The Shar Pei also has a unique to the breed high set tail. The loose skin and wrinkles covering the head, neck
and body are in excess when puppies however, these features may be limited to the head, neck and withers in adults.

Coat: A very harsh coat that is loose and straight on the main body and head flatter on the limbs. Both a very short coat and a coat
up to one inch in length are acceptable.

Temperament of Breed: Loyal and devoted to his family, remember that this breed was initially bred to be a guard dog and a fighting dog.
