History of the Breed: Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are the result of crosses with Newfoundlands, hounds, Setters, Water Spaniels and other dogs and were first recognized as a distinct breed in America in the middle of the 19th century. They were ducking dogs used by hunters initially in the Chesapeake Bay. These dogs have the ability to swim for hours in icy-cold water retrieving ducks and geese.

General Appearance: A strong, well-balanced, powerfully built dog of moderate size and medium length in body and leg, deep and wide in the chest. The body has a distinctive shape with the hindquarters as high or slightly higher than the shoulders. The head is broad and round with a medium stop with jaws that are capable of carrying large game birds. This breed has a unique yellow-amber eye color. The double coat consists of a short, harsh, wavy outer coat in brown, chocolate, reddish brown, or dead grass color.

Coat: A double coat; with the undercoat being dense fine thick and wooly containing plenty of natural oil and the outercoat being short harsh and wavy.

Grooming needs: Low, should be brushed weekly

Temperament of Breed: The breed is very loving and makes a wonderful companion. The Chesapeake tends to recognize only one person or family as master.
Friendly with children: Yes
Friendly with other dogs: Yes with proper socialization however, this breed will defend his position as the alpha dog.

Suitability as a watchdog: Yes, this breed is very protective of its family and property
