History of the Breed: The breed name comes from the Russian word 'borzoi' which means swift. This breed likely originated in the 17th century by crossing a desert sighthound with heavier coated native Russian sheepdogs and hounds. The borzoi was owned and favored by the Russian nobility and used to hunt wolfs and other game. The dog is also known as the Russian Wolfhound.

General Appearance: A large, long and tall hound breed. The head is long and narrow with a slightly arched muzzle ending in a black nose. The eyes are dark and oblong. The ears lie back on the neck but may prick up partially when the dog is alert. The chest is very deep and the waist is narrow clearly indicating speed and power. The tail is low-hanging and curved. The longish silky coat may be wavy or with large curls, with a heavy mane at the neck. The colors are typically white, golden, tan or gray with black markings.

Friendly with other dogs: Yes, care should be taken to keep them on a leash around small dogs in parks or open spaces. The Borzoi can course (run down) other dogs and hold them by the neck.

Suitability as a watchdog: low, Borzois are very quiet dogs that seldom bark
