History of the Breed: The breed can be traced back to the the 3rd century it has been described in writings throughout history as a dog unrivaled for its scenting powers and determination to stay on the trail until the quarry was located. The famed St. Hubert's bloodline of the 8th century were the first bloodhounds imported to England. In the 12th century, the English elite were at the forefront of fostering the development of the breed for use in packs in hunting on horseback. This dog we know today as the Bloodhound looks very much like the dog of the 12th century. Bloodhounds have done well in America and have proven to be an important asset to law enforcement.

General Appearance: The Bloodhound has a large head with a wrinkled face and pronounced lips and throat giving him a solemn expression. The eyes are deep sunken and the lids form a diamond shape. The skin may pull the lower eyelids down giving that "morning after" look. The ears are very large and soft and hang low. The neck is long, allowing the hound to follow a trail with his nose to the ground without tiring. The shoulders are quite muscular and sloped back with good angulations front and rear. The chest is deep and has well sprung ribs. The feet are well knuckled and the coat is hard and short.

Height & Weight:
Height 23-27 Inches
Weight 80-110 Pounds

Coat: The skin is thin to the touch and extremely loose, this being more especially noticeable about the head and neck, where it hangs in deep folds.

Color: Black and tan, liver and tan, red.

Grooming needs: Low, never have to be bathed, should be brushed often. Bloodhounds have a distinctive doggy odor, which is offensive to some people.
