History of the Breed: The Black and Tan Coonhound is believed to have descended from the St. Hubert Hound (Bloodhound), and then
through the Talbot Hound which was already known in 11th century England during the reign of William I, Duke of Normandy. Indian fighters
and scouts used these dogs during the late 1700s. A very determined hunter, the Black and Tan will stay on track no matter how faint the
scent is. They truly are the ideal trail and tree hound with the unique ability to find a raccoon under incredibly poor scenting conditions.
General Appearance: An athletic working scent hound that is known for its nose and for its stamina. The head has a
medium stop occurring midway between occiput bone and the large black nose. The large eyes are from hazel to dark brown
in color and almost round. The ears are low set and placed well back on the head and extend in length beyond the tip of the nose and are
set at eye level or lower. The chest reaches at least to the elbows with well sprung ribs. The full length strong tail starts slightly below
the level of the backline. The short and smooth coat is black and tan in color.
