History of the Breed: Named for Bedlingtonshire, Northumberland, England, these dogs were first known as Rothbury Terriers for their life with nail makers and gypsies who lived in the Rothbury Forest near the Scottish border. The breed is believed to be a cross between wirecoated terriers like the Dandie Dinmont, and hounds like the Otterhound. The Bedlington was used as a vermin hunter by the miners of Bedlington who also used it as a fighting dog. Hunters used them as retrievers. The Bedlington Terrier was often called a "wolve in sheep's clothing."

General Appearance: A small hardy dog that resembles a sheep. The head has no stop, descending in an unbroken line from crown to the nose. The eyes are small and deep set. The tail is pointed. The dog is covered in a thick coat that is a mixture of soft and harsher hair.

Height 15.5 - 17.5 Inches
Weight 17 to 23 Pounds

Coat: A mixture of hard and soft hair standing out from the skin. Curlier hair on the head and face.

Color: Blue, sandy, liver, blue and tan, sandy and tan, liver and tan.

Grooming needs: High, they do need to be combed frequently (at least once a week) and trimmed approximately every two months to keep the coat healthy and beautiful.

Temperament of Breed: Very quiet, much like a sporting dog, until aroused - then the aggressive terrier spirit dominates.
