History of the Breed: The modern American Pit Bull Terrier can trace its roots back to England and the early 19th century. Crosses between “bully” type dogs and terriers eventually produced the American Pit Bull Terrier. The breed was initially used as a working dog controlling bulls for butchers and farmers.

General Appearance: A medium sized breed and one of the three breeds generally referred to as pit bulls; the other two being the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The head is wedge shaped with some slight forehead wrinkles. The small deep-set eyes can be any color except blue. Ears are rose or semi pricked, and typically cropped. The muzzle is straight and box like. The body is solidly built and muscular with a wide chest extending to the elbow. The tail is short and tapers. The coat of the American Pit Bull is short and stiff and may be any color.

Temperament of Breed: It is recommended that proper training and socialization with people and other dogs take place while the dog is young to combat aggressive tendencies with strangers and other dogs.

Friendly with other dogs: Yes, with proper socialization starting at an early age. This breed can be dominant.
