History of the Breed: This scenthound breed was developed in America for hunting Fox and other prey. The American Foxhound is lighter, taller, faster and has a better nose than the English Foxhound. The breed originated in America primarily for equestrian foxhunting. Almost all of the early leaders of the American colonies enjoyed hunting on horseback and many kept and bred hounds. These original hounds included Irish, English, and French varieties. These dogs were continually crossed to find suitable dogs unique to the conditions of the colonies. George Washington maintained a large pack of hounds at Mount Vernon and he continually sought to improve them. Washington is credited with the crossing of the English and French foxhounds to produce the French strain in 1785. Other strains in existence today include the Walker, Trigg, Goodman, July and Calhoun, originating from Kentucky, Maryland, Tennessee and Georgia.
