History of the Breed: Largest of the Japanese Spitz breeds, the Akita was originally bred to hunt large game such as bear, deer and wild boar.
The Akita breed dates back approximately 300 years and takes its name from the Prefecture of Akita in northern Japan.
General Appearance: A large heavy boned, powerful and alert Spitz type dog. The broad head forms a blunt triangle with a
deep muzzle, small dark eyes, and erect ears that are carried forward. The body is longer than tall with a chest that is both wide and deep equipped
with well sprung ribs. The back is strong and level. The loin is firmly-muscled. The tail is large and curled and carried over the back with a
dense and full coat of coarse straight hair. The Akita has short hair on the head, legs, and ears, with longer harsh hair standing out on the body.

Friendly with other dogs: Poor, they tend to be aggressive toward other dogs. Socialization is recommended starting at an early age.
