History of the Breed: The Reverend John Russell (1795-1883) of Devonshire (western England) developed one of the best working strains of terriers. The Reverend bread a feisty little working Terrier similar in form and function to the working Fox Terrier of the 1800s. Specifically, the Reverend Jack bread his terriers for Fox hunting and soon his dogs were known throughout England as the Jack Russell Terrier.

The AKC currently only recognizes the Parson Jack Russell Terrier.

General Appearance: Small in size and very large in attitude the Jack Russell is highly intelligent, very expressive, and can be brave beyond its ability. A sturdy small terrier measuring 10" to 15" at the withers. The body length is in proportion with the height and has an overall solid balanced image. The eyes are almond-shaped, ears are V-shaped drop and are carried forward close to the head. The body is athletic and the loin is slightly arched, the tail is docked. The color must be at least 51% white.

Coat: Two distinct coats: 1) Smooth, without being sparse 2) Rough or broken-coated without being woolly.

Color: White must be the predominate color (more that 51% white) with the balance as tan, black or brown markings. Brindle markings are also acceptable.

Grooming needs: Low

Temperament of Breed: This is a bold and very energetic dog. They are extremely loyal, intelligent, and assertive. Jack Russell's are feisty little dogs and are not a dog for everyone, especially first time dog owners. While adaptable to a variety of environments, they are first and foremost bred to hunt and the energy level of this little terrier can be overwhelming to some.
