History of the Breed: The Basenji is a very old breed that is considered both a sighthound and a scent hound. These dogs go back
4000 years and are one of the most ancient breeds of dog. Originating on the continent of Africa, Basenjis can be seen on
the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs and his ears can be seen on the dog-headed god Anubis. The Basenji also called the bark less dog is silent
on the trail and tribes in central Africa had him wear a hunting bell made of wood, or iron, or the shell of a Borassus nut in order to trail him.
General Appearance: The Basenji is a small, short haired hunting dog. The head is carried high on a well arched neck and its face is somewhat wrinkled.
The almond shaped eyes are dark. The ears are erect and set forward on the head. The body is lightly built with a short back and a narrow but
deep chest reaching to the elbow. The tail is set high and curled. The dog is covered in a short and fine coat.
Color: Red/white, black/white, tricolor (red/black/white), and brindle (black stripes on a background of red)/white.
There are additional variations, such as the "trindle", which is a tricolor, and a brindle.
Grooming needs: Low
Temperament of Breed: An intelligent, independent, but affectionate and alert breed. Can be aloof with strangers.
Friendly with children: If correctly socialized starting at an early age
